Welcome to my weekly meme Tell Me Something Tuesday where I ask you something and you tell me the answer!! It’s as simple as that and I thought it would be a great way for all of us bloggers to get to know one another! So this is how it works: I post a question here on my blog and then i give my answer. I invite all the bloggers to take the question and post it on their blog with their answer and we can hop around and see what everyone says! If you are a blogger don’t forget to leave your link at the bottom of this post! If you aren’t a blogger – that’s okay too!! Leave your answer in the comments section!

 Tell Me Something:

Do you like to read stand alone novels – why or why not? What is the last stand alone novel that you read?

My answer:

It seems to me that the stand alone novel is getting fewer and far between these days — well, in YA anyway. I can’t really speak for other genres because I don’t read them as much as YA. I can say though that when I walk through the young readers section at the bookstore that a lot of those books are series and not stand alone as well.

I remember years ago when I would read (before I started writing professionally) many of the books I read were stand alone. Some of them still stand out to me but when I try to think of the titles I draw a blank. That makes me sad because some of theose books were great! If I ever remember them I will give them a shout out!

I DO like to read stand alones but I guess as the trends go I would say that I do tend to like a series better. I’m not really sure as to the reasoning though. The only thing I can say for certain as to why I like a series a little better is because we get more time with the characters that I love. Its fun to watch characters that you love go through storylines and watch them change and grow.

But you know, when i asked this question on my Fan page on FB a couple of the answers really stuck with me. One was that, stand alone books are really great because you don’t have to wait a year for the next book to come out to find out the big secret or the big plot point. All the answers are in that one book so you get a complete and satisfying read. You don’t have to pull our hair out at the cliff hanger ending or just waiting the year for the next book to come out. Another plus of stand alone books is the time commitment. It seems that we are all super busy these days with life so picking up one book and reading takes a lot less time than reading through oh, four books of a series.

So, I think what I am saying here is that I would like to see more stand alone books in the future. I would love to hear some recommendations as to some good ones out now. I hate to admit it but I can’t remember the last stand alone book I read. It’s been years since I read one. But this question has made me realize that some things need to change ’round here and that be one of them!

lol.

So that’s what I think, now you tell me what you think!

Before you go grab next week’s question: (the FINAL question until Novemeber – TMST will be on haitus in October)

In honor of fall and my favorite month (October) tell me what you love best about fall and halloween. Feel free to post pictures! And do you plan to dress up for halloween? If so, what will you be? If not, when was the last time you dressed up and what were you? (Pictures!!! lol)

  1. Hi Cambria! I have to agree that time commitment is a big issue when reading a stand alone vs. a series. I myself am also a series lover, though I have found some great stand alone novels lately. They have all been YA contemporary novels. If you like such a thing, Perfect Chemistry by Simone Elkeles is GREAT, as are Forever Changed and Unlikely Allies by Tiffany King (who I mention in my answer). I haven’t found any YA paranormal stand alones; I think the closest I came there was Anna Dressed in Blood by Kendare Blake because it felt like a completed story when I finished it. I would love to see more paranormal stand alones though!

  2. I also like stand alones for the reasons you mentioned but also get more attached to characters of series.

  3. I have a list on my blog of some stand alones my own and reader recommendations. I personally love them and wish there were more because we all know how fond I am of cliffhangers!

  4. As long as I can care about the charcters and the story grips me, I will read anything! Great Q! =0)

  5. I was very confused when I received this in my inbox, thinking “Hey, isn’t it Wednesday??” Heheh. Yup… dunno why delivery to me was delayed, but here’s my link!

  6. I like both but sometimes you love a novel and the characters so much, you wish the writer would turn the story into a series.

  7. It’s alright if I will read stand alones though I generally like to read series… As far as I can remember the last stan alone book I read is Unguarded (though it’s still not finished)…
