Series Review

Show: Once Upon A Time

Channel: ABC

Air time: Sunday nights at 8 pm (EST)

Genre: Adult/fantasy

Director: Mark Mylod

Show Description:

Once Upon A Time is basically a modern day take on a fairytale. In my eyes it’s a mash-up of all the great story book characters all in one great show.

The show began when Emma Swan, an orphan since birth, is found by the ten year old son that she gave up when he was born. Henry (her son) is desperate for her help and brings her back to the small town in Maine where he lives called Storybrooke.

Emma means to just drop Henry at his home and go but when she arrives things just aren’t what they seem. She is drawn to the place and its odd residents. Henry pulls out a story book and proceeds to tell Emma about the characters and how he thinks that the residents in Storybrooke are characters from the book who have been cursed by the evil queen! That isn’t all, he thinks that Emma is the daughter of Prince Charming and Snow White and is the only person who can break the curse.

When I think of this show I break it into two categories. (In my brain because it makes it easier to keep it straight AND explain to my husband, LOL) The “Reality” category and the “Fantasy or Fairytale” category. So basically the “Reality” category is the things that are happening now. During the scenes in the “reality” category the characters are living in the real world (in Maine) and have NO memory of being characters in a storybook. They have no memory of their other identities or the people they loved in that world. Regina AKA the Evil Queen is the Mayor in this town and she knows everything. She is after all the one who cursed everyone. She continues to manipulate everyone and they don’t know why.

During the scenes in the “Fairytale” category we get to see the characters we know from the “reality” category in all their fairytale glory. They are all gorgeous with sweeping gowns or awesome costumes. They are magical, outrageous or evil. The setting is gorgeous and wonderous… a real feast for your eyes.

So basically, the show alternates between categories and we get a look into the characters from both realities. We learn more about them in each world.

Do I like this show?

I started watching it from episode one because you all know that I love this kind of thing. The setting was gorgeous, the outfits outrageous and the actors were good. At first I wasn’t sure if I liked it. I thought it was a little confusing at first. But the more I watched the more drawn in I got. The more involved with the characters I became. I watch it every week and trying to figure out which characters are who in the book is really fun. I am never right and I kind of stopped guessing. LOL.

My most fav episode was the Red Riding Hood one. OMG. It was sooo good. And how gorgeous is Red. I SO want to dye my hair dark and add in those red pieces. SO awesome.

The actors are really good too and each week is something new and it’s fun to watch. I’ll definitely keep watching.

I would recommend this to anyone who wants something entertaining, fun, dramatic and likes to be intrigued.

A word from the show creators:

(these quotes were courtesy of  http://beta.abc.go.com/shows/once-upon-a-time/about-the-show )

“We kept circling back to the idea of fairytales. The very first stories that you hear when you’re a kid. They’re full of magic and heroics and fear and joy. But we also found fairytales are full of all these unanswered questions. Like why is Grumpy grumpy? Why is Geppetto so lonely that he’d actually carve a little boy out of wood? And did the Evil Queen really try to kill Snow White simply because of vanity? With Once Upon A Time, we set out to explore those questions and not re-tell these stories but attempt to dig beneath what we all know and try to discover something new.”
– Adam Horowitz, Co-Creator/Executive Producer

Once Upon A Time is, at its core, a story about hope. “For us, that’s what a fairytale is. It’s that ability to think your life will get better. It’s why you buy a lottery ticket—because if you win you get to tell your boss that you’re quitting and you get to move to Paris or wherever and be who you always wanted to be. And that’s Cinderella, right? One day she’s sweeping up and the next she’s going to the ball. Adam and I just wanted to write about something hopeful that for one hour a week allows one to put everything aside and have that feeling that your dreams just may come true.”
– Edward Kitsis, Co-Creator/Executive Producer

So how about you? Do you watch this show? What do you think?

  1. I love Once Upon A Time. And the more episodes I watch the more everything fits in place. I hope there’ll be a second season! 🙂

  2. I watched the first five or six episodes then my boring husband said he was bored with the show and now I need to find time to watch it on my own. I have about ten episodes saved on my tivo. Never enough hours in the day to watch it even though I really want to.

  3. This sounds pretty neat! I haven’t been up to date with many shows lately I should give this one a try. Mash ups can be interesting.

  4. I love this show! I was like you and wasn’t too sure about it at first but the more I watch it the more I like it.
I love how so much is coming together and being uncovered. I love all the mystery.
