Welcome to Werewolf Wednesday where the moon is always full and I am howling. Every single Wednesday I will be profiling a new werewolf from books, TV or movies. I might also mix it up a bit some weeks and throw in some other furry fun!! Please feel free to join and howl along with me every week!

This week on Werewolf Wednesday I will be talking about werewolf movies. When I first started thinking about doing this post I realized that I haven’t seen that many werewolf movies.  And the ones I have seen haven’t been very good. L

So I thought I would collect a list here of most of the Werewolf movies I could think of – ones I have seen and not seen. If I am missing a few here that are Must Watches don’t be afraid to tell me what they are!!

The Wolfman is a 2010 American remake of the 1941 classic werewolf horror film of the same name. This film’s second half was significantly altered and expanded from the original film’s plot.

I haven’t seen this movie yet, and I have heard a lot of mixed reviews so I am not sure what to think. According to Wikipedia, the film grossed more than $140 million worldwide and won an Academy Award for Best Makeup.

An American Werewolf in Paris is a 1997 comedyhorror film about werewolves. It was directed by Anthony Waller and stars Tom Everett Scott and Julie Delpy. It follows the general concept of the 1981 film An American Werewolf in London.

Synopsis: An American man unwittingly gets involved with werewolves who have developed a serum allowing them to transform at will.

The title of this film has a bit of history; when production of the original London film ran into trouble with British Equity, director John Landis, having scouted locations in Paris, considered moving the production to France and changing the title of his film to An American Werewolf in Paris.

I haven’t seen this movie either. I have heard people talk about it but I haven’t seen this or the other American Werewolf in London.

The Howling. After a bizarre and near fatal encounter with a serial killer, a newswoman is sent to a rehabilitation center whose inhabitants may not be what they seem.

Eye-popping special effects highlight an updated werewolf story. TV newswoman, Karen White, goes on a retreat after a traumatic incident with a serial killer. But is she really safe? And what should she fear more: regaining her memory or the creepy residents of “The Colony”? Followed by many unsatisfying and unconnected sequels. Helped launch shortlived werewolf craze in early eighties.

I haven’t seen this one either and I will keep it real: The movie poster scares me and I am not watching this! LOL.

Van Helsing

Synopsis

Gabriel Van Helsing is a man cursed with a past he cannot recall and driven by a mission he cannot deny. Charged by a secret organization to seek out and defeat evil the world over, his efforts to rid the world of its nightmareish creatures have been rewarded with the title that now follows him: murderer. Van Helsing roams the globe an outcast, a fugitive, a loner, himself hunted by those who don’t understand the true nature of his calling. When dispatched to the shadowy world of Transylvania, Van Helsing finds a land stll mired inpast–where legendary creatures of darkness come to life–a place ruled over by the evil, seductive and unfeatable vampire, Count Dracula. And it is Dracula that Van Helsing has been sent to terminate. Anna Valerious is one of the last of a powerful royal family, now nearly annihilated by Dracula. A fearless hunter in her own right, Anna is bent on avenging her ancestors and ending an ancient curse by killing the vampire. Joined by a common foe, Van Helsing and Anna set out to destroy Dracula along with his empire of fear. But in challenging an enemy who never dies, Van Helsing uncovers a secret he never imagined and comes face-to-face with the unresolved mysteries of his own enshrouded past.

I just watched this movie the other night as it was on cable. My review is to be featured on another Werewolf Wednesday….

Underworld Selene, a beautiful vampire warrior, is entrenched in a war between the vampire and werewolf races. Although she is aligned with the vampires, she falls in love with Michael, a werewolf who longs for the war to end.

I have seen this series of movies and it was pretty good. Better than most vampire/werewolf movies I have seen.

The newest movie in the Underworld series is Underworld Awakening: The vampire warrioress Selene, escapes imprisonment to find herself in a world where humans have discovered the existence of both Vampire and Lycan clans and are conducting an all-out war to eradicate both immortal species.

I have yet to see this, I probably will rent it when it comes out on DVD, I have heard that it isn’t as good as the original movies….

Twilight Series I don’t really think I even need to write a synopsis here. We know what this is about. LOL. I have seen all the movies so far. They aren’t bad…. Some could be better. My favorite is New Moon so far and I think that is because Jacob and his werewolf pack have a bigger role in the story line. 😉

Teen Wolf (1985) starring Michael J. Fox. Teen discovers that puberty for him means he turns into a werewolf. One of the beneficial side effects is that it also turns him into a top-notch basketball player. But will his notoriety cost him his friends and can he find true love?

Of course, I have seen this. Bah ha ha ha!!! It’s actually an entertaining movie. Being made in the 80’s and only 4 years after I was born it doesn’t have very good effects but eh who cares? LOL. I thought it was entertaining and I also think it is interesting to see what society thought about WW back in the day as opposed to what they think now. 😉

I don’t know if you know but Teen Wolf is a new TV series on MTV. It debuted last summer and I am hooked. I can’t wait til the second season this summer!! I profiled the show a while ago on my blog and I think I may run the profile again soon for all you peeps who are new followers and want to get in the know!

So those are the most known about werewolf movies that I can think of. I haven’t seen hardly any of them! LOL. But let’s admit most of them are cheesy or just plain bad. Why do you think that werewolf movies are like this?? What do you think it would take to make a really good werewolf movie??

Happy Wednesday!

  1. I’ve seen all these movies and I love them all for different reasons! and ps, Underworld Awakening was AWESOME!! so awesome I saw it twice, in 3D 🙂 hahahahaha but onto your question. I don’t think werewolves should look too close to real wolves, but they should resemble them 🙂 and girls should never scream, run, then stop to look back LOL I really like the Underworld set, and also the Van Helsing, as those two were my favorites 🙂 However, Team Jacob all the way, but only because Taylor is HAWT! 🙂 I am hoping the future will hold more werewolf movies, good or bad, cuz it’s a slight obsession with me 😉

  2. there are many great werewolf films and if you are interested in practical make-up effects i would recommend watching American Werewolf In London and the howling.

If you enjoy classic horror then i would also suggest watching the 1941 Wolfman film, this is the seminal werewolf story and much of the mythology used in werewolf films today derive from this movie.

The Ginger snaps films are fantastic, there are three ginger snaps films and all of them are worth a watch.

Silver Bullet is another great werewolf movie i would recommend watching.

There are more good werewolf movies than you may think and I feel the worst werewolf film you have listed is Twilight films, the CGI werewolves are terrible looking and they turned werewolves into sexual assaulting pedophiles.

I am an old school werewolf fan and i wanted to give you suggestions for films to watch that an old school fan could dig.
