 Review (courtesy of me!)

I don’t remember hearing about this movie when it was released into theaters (oct 2011) but then I saw the poster at the Redbox (do you rent movies at a Redbox?) and I was drawn into it. Personally, I really like Justin Timberlake, I don’t really listen to his music (I did when he was in a boy band and I was in high school) but I like him. I also like Amanda Seyfried and her hair style in this move is very striking. Plus, they are holding guns. LOL.

I admit, I didn’t even know what this movie was about when I rented it. I wondered what the title was all about and I figured it was some kind of secret agent movie or something. Ha ha ha ha.

 I was wrong.

But the movie was better for it.

I know, I know… take a moment to catch your breath, it IS shocking that I could be wrong. It doesn’t happen often so take note. But this is the one time I am happy to be wrong.

I loved this movie. I don’t know about all of you but I seem to struggle to find a decent movie to rent. It seems like all we (me and the hubs) ever rent are crappy movies that we don’t really like. So, this was a breath of fresh air for me.

It turns out this wasn’t a secret agent movie but a movie about time… how about that!? Guess the title was a hint, huh? I didn’t realize this was a dystopian movie… but it is. It has a really cool premise to. In this movie time is a commodity. Time is money. Time is life. When you are born you literally have a build in clock in your arm. When you turn 25 you stop ages, the clock lights up and you get one year to live. One year on your clock, that counts down the hours, minutes, seconds you have until you time out. It doesn’t matter where you are when that clock runs out you literally fall over dead.

So how do you live?? You earn time. You replenish it. You go to work and instead of earning money you earn time. You get time put on your clock. The bus? You have to give time to ride it. Food? Alcohol? Clothes? Cars? It costs you time. I don’t know about you but when you have one year to live the latest pair of jeans seem kind of silly. The more time you have the longer you live.

So, Justin Timberlake plays a guy that lives in the hood – in the ghetto – and is poor. You know what that means. He doesn’t have much time.

But then his life changes. A guy with like a century to live (I think it’s a century… it’s a really long time… lol) gives him all his time and suddenly Justin’s character has a commodity that everyone wants…

He goes on a journey and meets Amanda Seyfried’s character who has been “rich” her whole life but she has never really lived.

Then its drama, drama, drama… action, action, action….some kissing…..

 The end.

 LOL. Sounds great right??

It really was a great movie. The concept alone has hooked me totally, completely. I kept saying throughout the whole movie.. is this a book? Where can I get this? Because seriously, this would be an amazing book. Don’t get me wrong the movie is great, but you know that books have way more time to delve into the characters and the society.

At times I felt the movie was a bit… rushed… or didn’t have the time I wanted to explore the society and the people who lived there. I liked the ending but found it a little far – fetched.

The acting: I really enjoyed the characters and the portrayal of them. It felt real to me. They felt like genuine characters that I could root for, relate to and like.

My husband liked it too. He stayed awake and he watched til the end. He even said he liked it and he is a hard sell.

I kept thinking why haven’t I heard more about this? Has no one else seen this movie?? LOL.

But seriously, there needs to be a book. I mean a world where money isn’t the thing that makes the world go round?? Wow.

I would recommend this movie to anyone who likes dystopian, unique concepts and even a touch of sci-fi. I would tell anyone who liked Justin Timberlake or Amanda Seyfried to give it a try.

If you watch it be sure to tell me how you like it!!

So there you have it. My opinion.

  1. I don’t have a lot of time (ha ha) to watch movies but I think this sounds like one I would enjoy; I’ll remember and if I get a chance, I’ll get it and watch it.

  2. I watched this and got bored halfway through. Didn’t like it very much… Justin Timberlake was lovely though 🙂
