My shelf candy pick today is:

Dragonswood by Janet Lee Carey

Wilde Island is not at peace. The kingdom mourns the dead Pendragon king and awaits the return of his heir; the uneasy pact between dragons, fairies, and humans is strained; and the regent is funding a bloodthirsty witch hunt, hoping to rid the island of half-fey maidens.

Tess, daughter of a blacksmith, has visions of the future, but she still doesn’t expect to be accused of witchcraft, forced to flee with her two best friends, or offered shelter by the handsome and enigmatic Garth Huntsman, a warden for Dragonswood. But Garth is the younger prince in disguise and Tess soon learns that her true father was fey, making them the center of an exciting, romantic adventure, and an ancient prophecy that will bring about peace between all three races – dragon, human, and fairy.

Isn’t this a beautiful cover? The colors are gorgeous and striking and the movement is beautiful. It is almost haunting. It almost seems that she might be walking on water – yet we know she can’t be doing that – so what is she doing? Flying? Being pulled up by some unseen force?

I love the arc of her body and arms and the fullness of her skirt. It definitely makes me want to know what the story is about!

How do you feel about this cover?

Happy Saturday!

  1. I love the magical look of Dragonswood. It reminds me of the ballet, only with some extra goodies. Beautiful choice.

  2. Yes, it is a beautiful cover!
I totally bought this book in my local bookstore without reading the synopsis, just based on the cover. I totally agree.
I was never sure if she was falling, flying or dancing on the water. I can only hope to read the book to find out! And the full skirt? GORGEOUS!
    Great pick!

    1. Really! I can’t wait to hear what you think of it!! You know its a good cover when you just buy it on the spot. lol. thanks for stopping by

  3. I would buy this book just because of the cover! Great choice.

  4. I think this cover is great. I have been wanting to feature this one for awhile, but I keep forgetting about it!! I love the colors and that dress!

  5. Hi, Cambria!

What a BEAUTIFUL cover! It has such a magical feel to it! She’s not walking on the water — she’s actually DANCING on it, barely skimming its surface. She’s doing it through magic, of course. I think that’s why all those white, scribbly things are right underneath her feet; it’s the crackling of her magic. Lovely!

That stormy background is eerie and wonderful at the same time. The colors are reflected on the lake surface. All of this makes for a very dramatic contrast to her billowing white dress. She seems to be in some sort of ecstatic trance as she dances. Since Steph at FABR mentioned the ballet, I would reference Tchaikovsky’s “Swan Lake”. Perhaps that’s what the author and cover designer had in mind. If so, it’s very effective!

Great Shelf Candy pick!! Thanks for sharing!! : )

    1. Hi Maria!
I hadn’t thought of “Swan Lake” until you said ti but you are right, that is what it kind of reminds me of. Great comparison. I definitely can’t wat to read this one!!

  6. My favorite thing is definitely the contrast. The background is so dark, eerie, solitary, and cold! Because the girl is so light and bright, it makes it seem a lot more powerful and magnificent in a way. Like, against all odds, she used everything she could (ergo the pose) to pull herself through and conquered all! Great pick!
