Today Alexandra has written up a pecial guest post all about her writing life and he she went from writing novels into poetry. I invite you all to read below but first I want to welcome Alexandra and thank her for being here today!!!!

Before we get to her fabulous post how about a little info about our wonderful guest?

About Alexandra:

I’ve been obsessed with writing practically all my life, and have been scribbling “stories” ever since I could form letters (and even before, writing squiggles that resembled letters). I started writing my first real novel when I was twelve, and finished about halfway through my thirteenth year, though I don’t expect anyone to see that novel any time soon, since its gone into hiding…

I was admitted into college early through Duel Enrollment, and met some of my favorite people at school–and some of my favorite professors. I started out as a dance and theater major, wanting to go into acting and possibly dance with the NYCB, but after taking a Creative Writing class, I decided to pursue my life-long dream of being a published author.

Now, years and many trials and re-writes later, here I am in the literary world, trying to make my way and having my stories read.

And now for Alexandra:

The Lyrical Life of Writing

Why is it that we write? I’ve been trying to answer that question for quite some time, but I haven’t been able to find an answer yet…and maybe that is because the answer is in the question.

Because the answer is simple: Write we, that is why.

Now, I don’t mean to sound like Shakespeare (though if I did, I definitely wouldn’t mind it, because I’ve always loved Shakespeare), but it’s true. Writers do one thing: we write. Why do we write? — because we do. It’s that simple.

But, then it gets complicated again, because there are so many different types of writing — script writing, novel writing, short story writing, poetry writing. You can be an author, you can be a screenwriter, you can be a lyricist. All are types of writing, though all are very different — and that is only the surface of the writing types!

I’ve always loved to write, just one of the reasons that I became an author, but I have never liked a specific type of writing. I love all writing, and so when an idea came into my mind (the idea that would become Lyrics of the Heart, my new novella), I set to thinking about what type of story it would be, and what type of writing.

I ended up with something new: poetry.

Poetry has been around for most likely forever, but I’ve never published anything that was poetry, though I’ve written a few poems. So, when I sat down to write Lyrics, I was just a little bit scared — because I had just finished a major writing project (called NaNoWriMo, during which I wrote the sequel to my next release, The Ending), and it definitely hadn’t been poetry.

Poetry and novels are very different. To write a good poem, you really have to think outside of the box, and you definitely have to be lyrical with your words — where with novel, well, not so much. In a way, poetry involves much more thinking and brain power than a novel does, because you have to think of a way to describe what you’re trying to get across more as feelings than as a simple image — though this is done in novels, too…just in a different way.

Despite my fears, I managed to write my poetry for Lyrics, and an amazing thing happened — I had fun! It’s always nice to try something new, and I’m definitely of the belief that you should try everything, and be well-rounded, though you may not be talented with everything. As a writer, for me this means trying poetry as well as novelling, and every other type of writing I can get my hands on!

I’d like to thank you all for reading this post, and offer a special thanks to Cambria for having me and being part of the Tour!

  2. Great post. I love poetry. It is something that I turn to when I feel like reading a little something that will give me something to think about. It is great when you can read the same poem over again and find something new.
